Documentary film director awarded with the Student Academy Award. Broadcasts on Netflix, Sky, Amazon Prime, Sooner, ZDF and Deutsche Welle, among others. Author, director and cameraman of the cinema documentary MEIN FREMDES LAND as well as author and director of the Sky Originals documentary series 22. JULI  – DIE SCHÜSSE VON MÜNCHEN.

 

Born and raised in Berlin. Master's degree in Political Science, History and Romance Studies from the University of Bonn. In 2010 Preuss begins working as a filmmaker for development cooperation projects, primarily on behalf of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). Within this framework, Preuss produces films in Ghana, Nigeria, Mexico and Malawi.

2014 graduation with diploma from Freie Journalistenschule Berlin (FJS) and admission to the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg (FABW) in the course Directing/ TV Journalism. Preuss's first self-relient FABW production is GALAMSEY – a 28-minute documentary about illegal gold mining in Ghana. In 2017 the film wins a Student Academy Award. It's the first time the renowned Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science awards a German production in the category 'International Documentary Film'.

Preuss' second FABW film is the 50-minute documentary CARRETERA AUSTRAL about a controversial road construction project through the jungle, fjords and mountains of Patagonia. In 2018, the german public broadcaster ZDF airs the film in an edited version under the title "Auf Straße 7 ins Herz von Patagonien". The German international broadcaster Deutsche Welle subsequently includes the film in English and Spanish language versions in its worldwide programme.

 

Graduation from film academy with the 65-minute documentary NOLLYWOOD about the film industry in Nigeria. In 2020 Deutsche Welle releases the film internationally in various languages and Hong Kong public broadcaster RTHK creates a Cantonese-language version. Since October 2022 the film is streaming on Netflix.

 

In 2019 Preuss co-founds the production enterprise DOKblick. The first production is the 94-minute cinema documentary MEIN FREMDES LAND, a co-production with SWR and Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg (MFG). In June 2022, Arsenal Filmverleih releases the documentary in German cinemas. National public radio station Deutschlandfunk praises: "An emotional rollercoaster ride that hasn't been seen in cinemas for a long time - outstanding!"

In 2020 the collaboration with Constantin Dokumentation begins with the production of the documentary series 22. JULI  – DIE SCHÜSSE VON MÜNCHEN. The four-part documentary series about a mass shooting incident at a Munich shopping centre is released as a Sky Original in July 2022 . The German newspaper Berliner Tagesspiegel writes: "An equally clever and exciting piece of television."
